Traditional shamanic incense made with woven leaves of California Sage, commonly called White Sage ( Salvia apiana ).

This type of incense, known as smudge , is recommended for deep purification ceremonies and rituals where the presence of smoke is necessary, which by its very nature has a more decisive and pervasive action, absorbing and transforming stagnant energies into something lighter and more sublime. The vibrations that are perceived from a fumigation with Smudge are comparable to those of a drum.

Fumigation with White Sage helps to rebalance the energetic bodies, acting on feminine, Earth frequencies, connected to the healing and protective force of Mother Nature. It cleanses the environments, promotes inner harmony and rooting.

How to use Smudges:

Bring the smudge close to a live flame and let it burn for a few minutes, without letting the flame flare up too much, in which case gently shake the smudge to put it out. Repeat the lighting until embers form and the bundle begins to give off intense white smoke. When the fumigation is finished, be sure to put out the smudge.

Why choose Matika®:

Our incenses are 100% natural and eco-sustainable, made in California exclusively with herbs from spontaneous collection, by expert craftsmen who follow the original method passed down from generation to generation.

Light the Smudge and let it burn for a few seconds, then wave it in the air or blow to put out the flame. Repeat until a thin layer of embers forms at the end of the bundle. This will begin the process of purifying your space. When the smoke dies down, gently blow on the embers to revive them, being careful not to let the ash fly onto your clothing or furniture.
To put it out, seal the Smudge in a glass jar or sink the smoking end into a container of sand.

You can continue the purification by lighting the Palo Santo stake.
For a deeper experience, use the two incenses in combination, allowing their smoke to mix and work synergistically.
Keep the flame lit on one end of the Palo Santo for a couple of seconds and then blow it out by waving the stick in the air. Be careful not to keep the flame lit for too long or you risk burning the resin, releasing a bad smell and black smoke.
If the flame goes out on its own after a few seconds, don't worry, that's how it's supposed to work.
Once the flame is out, blow on the patina of embers that forms on the top of the stake. The smoke from the Palo Santo will die down after a few seconds. Repeat the lighting to revive the embers and continue the fumigation.
